Philosophy of Education
Children are their own unique and exceptional individuals who need a safe, compassionate, and motivating atmosphere in which to grow and develop emotionally, cognitively, physically, and socially. As an educator, my goal is to guide students to a path where they will reach their full potential in the areas mentioned above in an environment that allows them to thrive by asking questions and developing reasoning. I believe that in order to reach this goal I need to mentor students effectively, contribute to their intellectual growth, and gain new perspectives and insight from each and every one of my students. The most exceptional aspect of being a teacher is that you are learning something new everyday whether it’s about the curriculum, teacher effectiveness, or from your students.
Teachers should make sure that students are reaching their full potential each and every day. We need to push our students to enable them to become college and career ready. I have come to the conclusion that while teaching we should whole-heartedly embrace the common core learning standards. Our students need to become critical thinkers who develop the ability to create well-supported arguments with evidence-based reasoning. The more that we push and challenge our students the further they will grow. We will never know their capabilities unless they are put to the test. I strongly believe that we need to set high but realistic expectations for our students so that they can still feel that sense of accomplishment when they succeed. As teachers, we need to instill in our students these life long skills that they will need for the rest of their lives, whether it be in college or out in the real world.
As a teacher, my main goal is to act as the facilitator and allows the students to take charge and lead the way. I will provide students with the information necessary to grow but I will encourage them to constantly question and develop reasoning behind their responses. They should be constantly wanting to learn more about a topic whether its through textbooks or technology. I will teach students to become critical thinkers by creating arguments and using reasoning to support their arguments. In order to construct knowledge, students need the opportunity to practice these skills in authentic settings, which I will provide everyday. Supplying hands on and engaging activities during independent work will allow the students to put their skills to the test and will provide the students with the opportunity to develop comprehension and understanding.
I truly believe that knowing your students it the most important part of being a teacher. If you do not know your students then there is no way for them to learn and grow. I believe in measuring your personal teacher effectiveness everyday whether it’s reflecting on the day or tracking the students’ progress. Teachers should be constantly growing and changing to fit the ever growing needs of the children. As a school we need to work together, as a community, towards a common goal, the growth of the students. We should all be working in collaborative partnerships with our colleagues so that teachers can thrive, therefore allowing the students to thrive.
I have a very strong passion for learning and I aspire to one day instill this same desire into my students and make them life long learners. Excellent educators are compassionate, strong and dedicated to what they do and I believe that I possess all of these things and more. My motto is that you must give 100% everyday and it is not worth doing if you are not going to give that 100%. That is how I visualize teaching as well; I strive everyday to be the most effective educator I can be.
